What We Do

We Work For

Our major areas of interventions are Education Enhancement, Health and Care, Livelihood Promotion, and Environment Conservation.

Women are our main beneficiaries and major agents of social change and as a consequence, children too are a major target group. At the same time, we also sensitize and generate awareness among the men to contribute in a constructive manner to the development of community and the area as a whole.

EDUCATION ENHANCEMENT

The Total Literacy Campaign which had been launched last year covering 320 children and sensitization of parents/guardians and community, selection of suitable teachers, and provision of study materials, was launched in HARDOI DISTRICT, where the majority of the people belong to the Muslim Community. The focus was on 60 non-school-going girls in the age group of 11 to 14 years. Residential facilities with lodging, boarding as well as recreation were provided. And the effects have been quite gratifying. The enrolled student is demanding more inputs. The parents of non-enrolled children have started demanding enrollment of their children. The campaign in effect has developed among the children, a Learning to learn.

The Library established has gained in popularity. There are presently over 4000 books and over 200 magazines/periodicals. There are books on a diverse range of subjects that touch the lives of the rural poor and educative and informative. The magazines provided information on affairs of national and international interest. There has been a marked increase in huge number of readers. Even women have started frequenting the library. Besides providing knowledge and information, the library has developed into a forum for collective learning and dialogue, cooperation, solidarity and mutual affinity. It has developed into a center for

informal learning for the community in an atmosphere of camaraderie and friendship.

COMPUTER LITERACY

The successful results of the above interventions have emboldened us to start a center for Computer Literacy in a small way. This is the age of Information Technology and without computers, it is impossible to keep pace with the rest of the world. At present, 15 candidates have been enrolled and are learning DTP. We are hopeful that more students will join the Centre in due course and the schools nearby will have IT as a regular subject in their curriculum.

HEALTH AND CARE

Good health is the fundamental right of every person. In this context, a project called “Sure Start”, launched by PATH Foundation, and run by BAIF was initiated last year. The over-arching objective of the project is Safe Motherhood and full care of newly-born children so that they gain access to health and happiness.

This project aims to provide pregnant women, lactating mothers, and new-born children access to good health with the assistance of information through trained Health Workers and service delivery at a nearby place.

To safeguards pregnant women must take for their own well-being and for the life stirring within them, the importance of mother’s milk, colostrum, warm chain, etc. are taken care of. Besides, regular check-ups during each stage of both, the mother and the baby are carried out….Care of. besides regular check-ups during each stage of both the mother and the baby are carried out.

20 Community service centers are functioning and in each meeting, the beneficiaries discuss the issues of sanitation hygiene women issues childcare, etc. The youth also participate in the meeting Though the main issue is mothers and child care other issues are also discussed and debated in one center, 25 women and adolescent girls are undergoing training in cutting and tailoring as a measure of income –generation.

In the month of February 2009, two camps were organized in  Delhi to generate awareness  Among women 25 women participated in each camp which was of 8 days duration issues on Female foeticide, women’s right, legal laws governing women issues concerning the Girl Child awareness on HIV/AIDS, etc were discussed.

LIVELIHOOD PROMOTION

Poverty is rampant in the area. Poverty is a result of low level of assets and low returns. Agriculture is non-remunerative, and the non-farm sector has failed to generate employment. The poor lack education and skills to take advantage of the opportunities available. 20 women/ adolescents are provided skills in cutting, stitching, sewing, etc. These small tailoring units serve as profitable cottage industries which have a ready-made local market.

A number of handicrafts are being developed by local artisans. Which are being upgraded through training obtained from empaneled experts by the Dept. of Handicrafts, These handicrafts have a very good market since they are still widely used, not only in the rural but also in the urban areas. Expert assistance lends the durability of the craft and fetches better prices from the market.

The Self Help Groups (SHGs) are functioning very well. Inter-loaning is going on and emergency funds are usually available. A number of them have been linked to banks. The SHGs have brought the members together, promoted ownership of the group, developed a forum for collective learning and inter-agency dialogue, promoted a sense of solidarity, and developed into a cost-effective credit delivery mechanism. The SHGs in effect have freed the members from the clutches of the money lenders.
